Clendennen Family Bien Nacido Vineyard Petit Verdot 2013
Immediate smoked earth meets pure Kirsch on the nose. There is incense and rose petal and sprouting seeds on the nose, all very pretty, but there is also an Islay single malt peak smoke beneath it. The palate is focused and driven with a dense tart cherry fruit intermixed with sunflower seed and fennel. Jim was never shy about oak on his wines but the seven years of bottle age have integrated beautifully. This feels like a classically made Bordeaux wrapped in a luxurious uniform of sun-dappled California, which might be a great way to describe Jim himself!
