Chassorney Volnay 2022
"Domaine de Chassorney was established by pioneering natural winemaker Frédéric Cossard in 1996. Centered around leased and owned holdings near his cellar in Saint-Romain, Cossard became and continues to be one of the leading lights of natural winemaking and viticulture in the region.
As Fred approaches retirement age without any interested heirs, he formed a close partnership with local winemaker and friend Aurélien Verdet in 2019, with the idea that he would eventually transfer the domaine to Aurélien after a transition period of a few years. Aurélien hails from the nearby hamlet of Arcenant in the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits, and also is son of another leader in organic Burgundian viticulture, Alain Verdet. He has also been running his family’s domaine for some time. All of these factors made him a natural fit to take the reins from Fred.
After three vintages working side-by-side with in the cellar and vines – all while continuing vinification under Cossard’s tutelage in his cellar in Saint-Romain – Aurélien assumed full control with the 2022 vintage and moved production to Arcenant. In this new era for the domaine, its various parcels so strongly associated with the Chassorney name, as well as the undying commitment to organic viticulture and hands-off winemaking are safe in Aurélien’s hands. He continues to vinify using exclusively whole bunches, and maintains Fred’s soft touch throughout vinification and élévage. The only deviation of note is a small addition of SO2, which lends a slightly more classic feel to wines’ overall profile.
Fred continues to produce his négociant wines from Burgundy, Beaujolais Jura, Rhône, and Alsace out of the same cellar in Saint Romain." -Supplier notes
